"In Oceania, Big Brother used Telescreens to broadcast the exact same reality to everyone simultaneously. Let's see if we are seeing the same reality." You and a spectator each take one of two seemingly identical copies of the novel 1984 resting on the table.

The effect and experience

First, you flip through your copy until she tells you to stop. When she turns to the exact same page in her own book, you read the first sentence aloud to confirm that both books match. Next, she calls out any random page number. You both turn to that page, and you correctly reveal the last word on your page, which she confirms matches the page in her own book.

Performance possibilities

You then repeat the process on the opposite page, turn the page, and do it twice more until she is completely convinced that the two books are absolutely identical. "But here is the problem with history in 1984. It can be rewritten in an instant. The Ministry of Truth can make an entire life, an entire book, vanish into a memory hole." Now hand your book to a second spectator and ask someone to call out a random page number. When they both open their books to that page, the impossible happens.
