Sky Catch by Taylor Hughes

Sky Catch by Taylor Hughes, created in collaboration with Vanishing Inc., is a modern and practical reimagining of the classic Card Sword plot. A selected card is lost in the deck, the cards are sprung into the air, and the selection is caught in mid-air – but instead of a traditional sword, you use an ordinary-looking reacher grabber.

The familiar everyday object immediately introduces a natural comedy element while replacing the large and impractical magic sword with something audiences instantly recognise.

Catch a Selected Card in Mid-Air

A card is selected and can be signed by the spectator before being returned to the deck. The cards are sprung into the air, and you use the grabber to catch the spectator's selection amongst the flying cards.

Sky Catch has been designed so that this classic Card Sword effect can be performed with a signed card, with no palming, no loading and no difficult sleight of hand.

A Classic Plot with a Modern Approach

Traditional Card Swords can be cumbersome to travel with and often look unmistakably like specialist magic props. Sky Catch takes a completely different approach.

The grabber resembles the familiar household tool used to retrieve objects that are out of reach. It is immediately recognisable to an audience and naturally opens the door to comedy within the routine.

Packs Small and Plays Big

Sky Catch was developed with working performers in mind. The grabber folds down for easier travel while the effect itself is designed to play for a substantial audience.

Taylor Hughes has used the routine to close shows at venues ranging from the Chicago Magic Lounge to the Magifest stage. According to the supplied material, the routine works whether you are performing for 50 people or 5,000.
